The New Experience – Semantic web of communication

Digital assistants booking hotel rooms for the family vacation with our preferences – All we need to say is OK to book!

When we would like to book a hotel room through online for a family vacation with certain preference, typically we search through some booking sites and it goes for some iterative searches and sometimes it is frustrating to nail down on few options! Imagine this whole task is carried by a digital assistant in mobile or desktop to show the relevant hotels with our preferences in a short time with our minimal effort!!

Let’s look at another scenario, think of the kids in the school developing an automated system to check the moisture content in the soil and then pump the required water into the soil, to accomplish this task, it takes multiple searches in the internet and most of the time we have to procure the components from different sources… How about a digital assistant can bring out the whole world of components, where to purchase and the procedures to build the kit etc., in a single place with a simple search, how easy it will be?! Imagine the amount of effort, time and money is saved!

The good news is we have started moving towards getting these kind of experiences, Semantic web as part of Web 3.0 is driving towards making the data intelligent and let’s look about why and how semantic web is helping to create new experiences.

What is semantic web and why it is important?

Semantic web is a mesh of data descriptors added to the existing content in the web, which helps the machine to interpret the content and make meaningful interpretations like human being!

We are all aware there is humungous data is available in the internet, when we search it brings out the related information with the help of keywords and based on the information which we provide to search, the results get personalized to our preferences.

Beyond that if we want to accomplish the new experience as mentioned above, the contextual information and the related contents with similar context is required. Semantic web enables the machines becoming more intelligent with the help of contextual information getting added to the existing data in the internet.

Again, Semantic web is a mesh of more information in a structured way from unstructured data and with more volume, if we want to get the real power of data and unlock new value in terms of getting new experience, relevant information or assist us to perform some tasks like operating a machine, explain an experiment in school etc., the data has to become intelligent.

Web 3.0

Semantic web data alone will again be like static web pages, what brings more power is web 3.0. The major components of Web 3.0 are AI, Ubiquitous computing and Semantic web.

  • Ubiquitous computing is computing from anywhere on any device which makes the data available globally
  • AI is the intelligence engine, which makes of the data in semantic web and create meaningful inferences.
  • Semantic web is the contextual information that we already discussed.

All put together, the computers / digital assistants start interpreting the data in a better way with the context of the search and with the intent of interaction, which leads to create a better user experience, and more importantly with added intelligence, many of the mundane jobs getting automated. The communication in the internet is changing towards “semantic web of communication”!

Where it is being used? Some applications of Semantic web:

Semantic web of communication is not something new, in fact, some companies like BBC are already using the semantic web.

BBC on an average produce and publish about 1500 programs in a day. Imagine the task in hand for BBC in terms of storing these programs in a way which can be retrieved easily or from the user perspective, someone coming to BBC website and searching a program and bringing out the relevant program for the user.  In both the cases search and displaying results is a challenge in the traditional methods.  Hence BBC started using Semantic web, adding related contextual data which will help to bring out meaningful information to the users searching the data. For the user the technology behind “semantic web of communication” is hidden, and what the user sees is only the relevant information.

BBC is not the only company which is using semantic web, there are many companies which have already started using semantic web, and with Web 3.0 picking up, the world of new experiences in the internet is very near.
